Drawing and Printmaking
My work predominately focuses on the search for a personal narrative, an essential energy; the ‘essence’ of a chosen subject or place encapsulated in an emotional response.
Working often with a combination of techniques, a final piece may have several layers of colour & texture using experimental methods in order to produce work that aims to describe movement, the energies found in nature, beautiful light, contrasts and reflections, or the mysterious substance of shadows.
A subject visited whether it be an urban setting or landscape, are habitually used as a personal language to convey a moment in time, a specific note on a journey travelled. An exploration of contrasts, a sense of place or character are recorded in sketchbooks. Drawing is used as a method of gaining knowledge of the subject and through its process, to search for those important elements which will be developed in the final works. The resulting artworks are a means of exploration, both of technique and of subject. A personal navigation revealing the under layers of its process in the conclusion of the piece, work triggered by the experience of life, both felt and surveyed.
