Helen Bermingham works with memory. Her current work is her Fictionscape series- a combination of memories, fictions, thoughts and daydreams that come together to create new imagery. Half-remembered landscapes transform into psychological spaces, abstract faces recall a partly forgotten figure, objects from her childhood; souvenirs, ornaments, keepsakes that evoke a certain familiarity or memory develop and twist into new narratives. Starting with the memory, the painting is allowed to shift and change creating a new image. Blurring and disrupting the image through paint, memories are both disappearing and reappearing. In this way the narratives of history are eroded and interrupted, fading and dissolving. New worlds are created, new figures occupy the space of old memories and the image becomes a framework within which other ideas can occur.
